Doctoral Education in Design

15th International Conference of the European Academy of Design, 16-20 October 2023

We invite colleagues from five different cities across the globe to host one day of talks on the theme of ‘Doctoral Education in Design’; to collaborate and help celebrate 25 years since the first Doctoral Education Conference in DesignFocusing on the local and global ecosystem that support doctoral education and doctoral research, it will reflect on the progress made to date, the current state of play, and the needs of the next 25 years of developments. It will bring together students, supervisors, research sponsors, training providers, and design education leaders in critical creative conversations.

The conference will take the form of a research festival with five, 1-day events, in five different cities across the world. The intention is to create a dialogue, to further support communities of doctoral design education practices, and provide a new series of critical writings on doctoral design research culture.

What does it mean to be an EAD15 Hub and how can you make it happen?

It will involve collaborating with colleagues in higher education in your area from at least two universities who award PhDs in Design, to organize a 1-day, in-person event. The event needs also to be virtually accessible for people around the world to attend, listen, pose questions, and share in the discussions about developing frameworks for excellence. It is not a hybrid conference. It is an in-person event with opportunities for people to virtually engage with the live proceedings. The virtual engagement will be facilitated to enable interaction and learning, rather than a chance to virtually present work.

Interested in hosting a 1-day event?
